#55: Director’s Roundtable Featuring Claire Avitabile, Carin Bratlie and Michael Mellas

Claire Avitabile, Carin Bratlie and Michael Mellas gather together for a director’s roundtable, in which they talk about their processes and the whys, hows, troubles and triumphs of directing.

In addition to directing, Claire Avitabile is artistic director of the Twin Cities chapter of 20% Theatre Co. Presently, TC 20% is running Teach Me Tonight, directed by Leah Cooper and playing at the Gremlin Theatre until May 23. Claire is also currently casting for her next show, After Juliet, which she’ll be directing. We last spoke with Claire in January in podcast #16, in which she talked more in-depth about the concept behind 20% Theatre Co.

Like Claire, Carin Bratlie wears a second hat as artistic director of Theatre Pro Rata. We last chatted with Carin in podcast #43, where she spoke more about Theatre Pro Rata and their production of Galileo. Currently, Carin’s directing the play Bard Fiction, a take on Pulp Fiction, for this summer’s Fringe Festival.

Michael Mellas is currently directing Urban Samurai’s production of Protection Program. The last time we talked with Urban Samurai was in February with #22. Protection Program runs from May 22 to June 7 the Sabes Jewish Community Center.
